The inaugural year of the FARM GRUB Revue Performance Troupe is coming to a close today. For the 2011-2012 school year, Chickin Feed (Mother Hen, Chirpin’ Chick and Drama Chick) have produced an after school enrichment program full of healthy snacks and song & dance. Fortunate to enroll some pretty enthusiastic & talented kids in grades 1-4, we have practiced and performed all around the community – building healthy habits, one song at a time. We performed at the Farmers Market, Fall Festival, Holiday Festival, On the Radio! (The Kids are Alright on am1690), Under the Gold Dome of the Capitol – flash mob style and we are wrapping up the year with a “Reality TV Show” called FARM GRUB takes on AMERICA!

The kiddos got the chance to record the awesome song Power Me Up for a real song that will be published & downloadable soon!

So many thanks to Amy Handler (Drama Chick), Katherine Moore (Chirpin’ Chick) and all the FARM GRUB performers! YOU ROCK.

I had a nice opportunity to visit Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta this week and do a presentation on building healthy habits as part of their Healthy Families event. Since teens aren’t my specialty… ( I’ve got a few months to go – yowza!) I did some research that turned up a very informative and useful document created by Johns Hopkins University all about the Teen Years. This report is a very straight forward, very well presented look at the development of a teen. Soup to Nuts. Please check it out when you get a minute. Click here to download pdf.

Also, I asked my friend Lauren at Healthy Foundations for some tips and tricks about feeding a teen brain. She came up with this one-pager that is very useful! Click here to download pdf.

I also took the Top 10 List that I put together a while back that really relates to any age. Definitely “Fridge Postable!”

This is the evolution of our popular Nutrition Tracking Boards. A simple way for little “chickins” or anyone for that matter to build an awareness about what they NEED to eat every day. Our two-sided laminated mat will give your chickins something fun to do and eye-opening to think about while they are eating.

Just put their plate on the mat and let them compare what’s on their plate with what they NEED (each FARM GRUB critter represents a serving of a different FEED GROUP) and check off the servings as they go.

The goal is to get everything checked off – meaning they’ve had a well-rounded diet and to let your “chickins” take ownership of what they NEED. Because sometimes seeing is believing. And let’s face it, couldn’t we all use a little help encouraging healthy habits?

Our Track’n PlaceMat comes complete with a non-toxic brown wax-crayon that dry wipes off at the end of each day. You may also use a dry-erase marker (not included). *TIP: Rub the mat with a very light coating of olive oil before your chickin begins marking – it will make the end of the day dry wipe-off a breeze.

The back of the Track’n PlaceMat is a fantastic resource for anyone needing to see the WHAT’S & WHY’S of eating of a balanced diet. Given the “thumbs up” from our resident Nutrition Chick, Emily C. Harrison, MS, RD, LD, the back of the Track’n PlaceMat gives sound reasoning and some great suggestions for foods in each FEED GROUP.

And of course the FARM GRUB characters are all here to encourage healthy habits! All at a price that fits into any household budget!

*included with Starter Kit

Make sure to pick up a copy of the CD too!

Hi Leslie,

…I can not tell you what a great product I think you have… I bought the (nutrition tracking) board for my daughter when she was 3 1/2. Everyday she would get excited over moving one chickin over for every food she ate. When we started, we explained to her the way that the board worked and why she needed to use it.

After a few days she came to me asking if she could have some sort of cookie. My response was, “What does your board say?” She looked and chose to have a piece of fruit vs the cookie because she had not met her fruit and veggie requirement for the day. This melted my heart and made me saying, “No” to the cookie so much easier. She was in charge of her food.

She is now 6 and makes great food choices on a daily basis. She may not use the board everyday but she does think about the quality of food that goes in her mouth!

I can not tell you how thankful I am for your help in teaching such a valuable lesson to my children!

Thanks,
Sarah M.
Mother of three little chickins

I’m honored to be Camp Director for CAMP GO! Georgia Organics 15th Annual Conference will be held in Columbus, GA this February 24/25. I encourage everyone to check out their website and the amazing schedule of Farm Tours, Classes, Expo, Feasts and a terrific Farm to School Summit (check out their cute logo!)

For the second year in a row, I’ll be wrangling the kids portion of the conference. We planning a great fun day for a group of 6-12 year olds, full of Environmental Exploration, Nature Crafts, Survival Skills, Yoga, Screen Printing, Good Food, Tents and Tales at night and more I’m sure.

This year is going to be more fun than ever as we’ll have Nichole Bluh with us all day as our head counselor! Nichole has worked with Atlanta’s Truly Living Well Farm & Wheat Street Gardens and helped set up and run their urban farm camp last summer Nichole has some amazing experiences with sustainable solutions of all types that she can share with the kids. She’ll also be available to share some yoga moves if needed!

Also on board are Isia and Chris, two urban farmers and foragers that I got to know working at the Grant Park Farmers Market. They run my favorite named urban farm, Crack in the Sidewalk Farmlet. Isia and Chris are experts at living with their environment, no matter where it finds them. They will bring a fresh set of eyes to explore our surroundings in Columbus.

And I almost forgot, we’re heading off for a morning excursion to the Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center where we’ll explore the environment, trails and exhibits along the southern part of the Chattahoochee River. We’ll return for lunch and a little Screen Printing project – don’t forget to bring a light colored T-shirt – we’re “Up-cycling” them with the CAMP GO logo!

The evening shift includes dinner (while parents attend the Farmer’s Feast) some Tent building fun, some Tall Tale Telling and maybe a movie.

If you’ve never been to the conference, this will be an amazing year. The keynote speakers are amazing…one of my “Most Admired” list of folks – Will Allen is addressing the dinner crowd (somebody’s going to have to make me a video!)

So make sure to check out the awesome program of events and REGISTER soon! Kids spots will go quickly.

Recipe by Chef Sheri Davis
from the Chickin Feed Primer | a useful companion for modern families

Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: Zero Yield: 10–12 servings

Food Groups Included: Grain/Bread/Pasta | Veggies | Protein

Utensils Needed: food processor fitted with metal blade (or blender), rubber spatula

Ingredients:

2 – 15 oz cans garbanzo beans/chick peas (our favorite!), drained
2 Tablespoons Tahini paste (a sesame seed product)
3 Tablespoons roasted garlic cloves, peeled (or 1 Tablespoon roasted
granulated garlic)
2 Tablespoons cumin, ground
Salt
White pepper
3 Tablespoons lemon juice (one large lemon)

Whole Wheat pitas to make chips
Butter

Instructions:

Step 1. In food processor, put drained garbanzo beans, Tahini, roasted garlic,
cumin, salt, and freshly ground white pepper.
Step 2. Blend and puree until smooth, stopping and scraping the bowl with rubber spatula several times.
Step 3. Add lemon juice when smooth. Don’t add lemon juice too soon – you’ll have chunky hummus.
Step 4. Serve with pita chips and veggies.

Tips:

I like to sauté my pita bread on both sides in a little butter to crispy it up a little.
Hummus makes a great spread for sandwiches or whole wheat tortillas, flatbreads of all flavors, wrapped with black olives, sprouts, lettuce, tomatoes, roasted tomatoes, thinly sliced cucumbers. Great for packing a lunch!

Snack Ideas:

Make different spreads for sandwiches or wraps: avocado, seasoned avocado with light sour cream or cream cheese, chopped cilantro, hint of lime, and tomatoes.

Puree leftover cooked beans and add flavorings or sour cream. Spread on tortillas or pitas, or serve with crackers as a dip.

Make hummus spread – add sprouts, tomato, chopped lettuce, cucumber slices, shaved carrots, black olive slices, roasted peppers, cooked or jarred artichokes.

And the list goes on…

Enjoy!,
Chef Sheri
